Bookkeeping Rates – How Much For A Bookkeeper?

November 23rd, 2007 · No Comments · Bookeepers

That’s a great question: “How much should I be paying a bookkeeper?”

Why outsource your bookkeeping?
Why hire a bookkeeper for your bookkeeping?
Do You Want a Cheap Bookkeeper?

How Much For A BookkeeperIt’s a question we get asked often – and there’s no right or wrong answer. Sometimes it’s like asking how much should you be paying for fuel. It can depend what day it is. If the bookkeeper is flat out with clients, and you want the job done quickly and efficiently, then you could be paying top rate.

If the bookkeeper doesn’t have much work on then you could be paying bottom rate. However, when every bookkeeper who is any good is currently having no problems getting clients you’d have to be asking “why is that bookkeeper available to do my bookwork right now?”

Like any industry, its supply and demand. Remember a few years ago in Sydney when there was a devastating hailstorm? You couldn’t find a smash repair business to fix your car, unless you wanted to pay top dollar. Roofing contractors were invading Sydney demanding all sorts of prices, because people were willing to pay whatever it took to get their roof fixed.

In Tasmania we know of a bookkeeper who’s charging $80 per hour, and has more clients than they can handle. Then there’s bookkeepers fresh out of TAFE who are charging $25 per hour.

Often clients will tell us they can get cheaper bookkeepers who are charging lesser rates. The same can be said of accountants, car mechanics, gardeners, builders, and electricians. If you are good at what you do, then you deserve to be paid accordingly.

You may pay a bookkeeper bottom rate and find it will cost you more in the long run. Just remember this: Your bookkeeper can generate reports to give you a clear picture of where your business stands. Your bookkeeper should be accurate, efficient and thorough in what they do. In many cases your bookkeeper will form an integral part of the financial side of your business

If you are cheap on the bookkeeping – it could cost you overall. Don’t let price be your only focus – when you should be seeking value for money
