We’ve talked previously about Customer Service, and here’s an example of how it can “mushroom” business

Many species of mushrooms seemingly appear overnight, growing or expanding rapidly, hence the expression “to mushroom” or “mushrooming” (expanding rapidly in size or scope) and “to pop up like a mushroom” (to appear unexpectedly and quickly).

We talked about the DVD store that was more concerned about making a once-off extra three dollars to sacrifice the possibiliy of a $500 per annum customer.

Last Saturday we visited the Farmers Markets at the Mudgeeraba Showground, and witnessed an amusing marketing strategy, that certainly invited an immediate response.

There’s a market trader of asian origin, who sells mushrooms. To make life easier for his clients, the mushrooms are weighed and bagged ready to be selected and paid for. Where as most stall holders would have bags of say 250,gms, 500 gms or a kilo, the mushroom vendor has bags marked at 454 gms, 311 gms etc.

Why are the bags not in weights of “even” numbers?
Quite simply, he doesn’t want to mess around with finding change - all bags are $3.50 or $5.00, hence the strange amount by weight.

When he hands you any change, he gives you a big cheesy grin, and hands you a large flat brown mushroom, as a “thank you”

How simple are those gestures? And what has it cost the mushroom vendor? He’s not concerned about the marketing costs, because he understands this very simple act will stand out in the minds of his customers.
