Having To Work For Living

Having To Work For LivingFor a long time a job with the public service was regarded as safe secure and a comfortable position to have. After all, unlike private enterprise, the Government believes that there’s a bottomless pit of money out in working Australia.

As Wayne Swann, our esteemed Treasurer, likes to inform us, he has the Australian working Families at the forefront of his decision making. It must be a fabulous feeling to be able to write blank cheques to prop up the Australian Economy – and to instigate the sudden and rapid demise of any Surpluss that the previous Government spent years accumulating.

Meanwhile, the Government’s personal staff and department liason officers are running like rats leaving a sinking ship. Reports suggest that the Prime Minister’s personal staff turnover was 19%, the Deputy PM had a 33% turnover. Could it be that suddenly being a public servant actually requires putting in a full days work – and then some?

The Climate Change Minister has recorded a 50% turnover – things must be heating up in Canberra. They’ve seen five Chiefs of Staff from some important portfolios departing. Here’s the crunch – concerns are being expressed about the workload and long hours required by these public servants! Hey guys, welcome to the real world.

Now here’s the surprise:
Most of these staff are youthful and with little experience – surely not the Gen Y? It must be rather a shock to discover that you are actually having to work for a living.
