More about Toowoomba

Toowoomba is Australia’s largest inland provincial city and is strategically located at the junction of major highways from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Darwin and is just 90 minutes drive from the state’s capital, Brisbane.

Toowoomba is the economic and commercial hub of the Darling Downs. It services a diversity of primary and secondary industries and plays a significant role in the economic development of a large area of Southern and South Western Queensland. Toowoomba covers 116sq km and is characterized by a relatively low density urban setting, with each person having almost twice as much recreation space as the average Brisbane resident.
Approx 110 000 people live in the greater Toowoomba area and Toowoomba serves as a major shopping and education centre. Toowoomba has one of the highest ratios of education facilities per head of population in Australia making it one of the most prominent education centres in both Queensland and Australia.

The largest industry employers in Toowoomba (2004) are retail trade (17.8%); health and community services (13.3%); manufacturing (12.2%); and education (11.1%). Professional employment was the most prominent occupation (18.2%) followed by clerical, sales and service workers (17.7%) and tradespersons and related workers (13.3%). The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is also present in the local community, with the city providing housing and amenities for many of the personnel based at the Oakey Army Aviation Centre (in Oakey, 29 km (18 mi) NW of Toowoomba) and Borneo Barracks at Cabarlah to the city’s North.
The city also has many large shopping centres including Grand Central Shopping Centre, Clifford Gardens, K-Mart Plaza, Garden Town, the Ridge Shopping Centre, the Range Shopping Centre, Wilsonton Shopping Centre, and High Street Plaza.
