Here’s the response we had from Coles Customer Relations”
Thank you for your email regarding the introduction of Unit Pricing at all our Coles outlets.
We have not had feedback from our customers that unit pricing is a significant issue for them. However, if customer attitudes changed in the future then obviously we would take that on board.
Write to your State Minister for Fair Trading/Consumer Affairs to show your support for the introduction of Unit Pricing.
In broad terms though, we believe these sort of labeling issues are best addressed at a broad industry and government level, so that we get outcomes that are consistent for all retailers across the
country, and gives customers consistency regardless of where they may shop.
Your feedback regarding this issue has been noted and forwarded to relevant management for their information.
Coles is committed to providing a high level of service to our customers and feedback such as yours helps us to continually improve.
We greatly appreciate the time you have taken to contact us and we will continue to work hard to ensure you enjoy shopping with us.
Kind Regards,
Manette, Coles Customer Relations
Dear Minister,
Truth in Grocery Pricing
I’m writing to encourage you to consider the benefits of the introduction of ‘Unit Pricing’ for packaged goods in supermarkets in Australia.
It is too difficult to compare the price of products in different sized packets.
I believe that if supermarkets displayed the “unit price” (such as the cost per 100 grams, per kilogram or per litre), shoppers would be in a much better position to judge value. I believe unit price displays would help shoppers save time and money, and make better choices.
Supermarkets in Australia already must show the unit price for meat, fruit and vegetables. Unit pricing for packaged goods is widely used in some US states and in the European Union, where it’s a legal requirement.
I urge you to act to encourage supermarkets to adopt this sensible consumer measure, and if they will not do so to take further action to ensure that consumers can easily compare product prices.
