What happened to the times when people had self respect? When people actually cared about what they did? What happened to craftsmen?
They are still around, but it seems that the “almighty dollar”, or is it the corporate executives, the trades unions, shareholders or the “Generation Why” no longer seem to understand the concept. There’s two sides to doing a job properly. It’s a win-win situation. You feel a sense of self satisfaction and self-worthiness, and the client is rewarded by a job well done.
Who cares? It’s not my job!
We’ve been dissappointed by tradesmen working for us. Their attitude has been get in, get the job done, and get out ASAP. No thought about what they were doing, no time for attention to detail, and an attitude of:”who cares, it’s not my job!”
The reason our clients keep coming back, and the reason that our bookkeeping business is growing, is because we do care about what we’re doing. Sometimes it seems that we care too much. We look at the reports, the profit & loss, balance sheets for our clients’ business and we may bring some matters to their attention. We’re not accountants or tax advisers or financial planners, but we do see patterns in businesses.
Often, by the time you see your accountant, he / she is looking at figures that are twelve to eighteen months out of date. The advice they give may no longer be relevant. Even bookkeeping is dealing with historic figures, but the figures we see maybe only a few weeks old. As bookkeepers, we do not need to bring the attention of anything to our clients – after all “Who Cares? It’s not Our Job!”
